Narrative:

The first officer was flying vectors at 14000 ft. We were cleared direct to scy VOR scurry 7 to dfw expect runway 17C. Just as we went past scy VOR ATC cleared us to hold on the scy 090 degree radial/10 mi legs. I directed the first officer to turn back to the VOR and I attempted to enter the holding pattern into the FMC. I entered a direct to scy and then a hold, but kept getting an invalid entry message. The first officer turned the aircraft back to scy and in the turn ATC questioned if we were holding at scy. We replied that we were returning to scy. We reached a maximum of about 8 DME northwest of the scy VOR before entering the scy 090 degree radial, right turn, 10 mi leg pattern. I could not get the FMC to take the holding pattern, until I deleted the approach and missed approach from the route. Then entering the holding pattern into the FMC was normal. What caused the FMC problem?

Title: THE FLC WAS CLRED DIRECT SCY, SCURRY 7 ARR TO DFW EXPECT RWY 17C. JUST AS THEY WENT BY SCY ATC CLRED THE FLT TO HOLD ON THE 090 DEG RADIAL 10 MI LEGS. THE FO TURNED BACK TO SCY, THE CAPT, PNF, ATTEMPTED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO BUILD THE HOLDING PATTERN IN THE FMC. ONLY AFTER DELETING THE APCH AND MISSED APCH COULD THE HOLDING PATTERN BE ENTERED.

Narrative: THE FO WAS FLYING VECTORS AT 14000 FT. WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO SCY VOR SCURRY 7 TO DFW EXPECT RWY 17C. JUST AS WE WENT PAST SCY VOR ATC CLRED US TO HOLD ON THE SCY 090 DEG RADIAL/10 MI LEGS. I DIRECTED THE FO TO TURN BACK TO THE VOR AND I ATTEMPTED TO ENTER THE HOLDING PATTERN INTO THE FMC. I ENTERED A DIRECT TO SCY AND THEN A HOLD, BUT KEPT GETTING AN INVALID ENTRY MESSAGE. THE FO TURNED THE ACFT BACK TO SCY AND IN THE TURN ATC QUESTIONED IF WE WERE HOLDING AT SCY. WE REPLIED THAT WE WERE RETURNING TO SCY. WE REACHED A MAX OF ABOUT 8 DME NW OF THE SCY VOR BEFORE ENTERING THE SCY 090 DEG RADIAL, R TURN, 10 MI LEG PATTERN. I COULD NOT GET THE FMC TO TAKE THE HOLDING PATTERN, UNTIL I DELETED THE APCH AND MISSED APCH FROM THE RTE. THEN ENTERING THE HOLDING PATTERN INTO THE FMC WAS NORMAL. WHAT CAUSED THE FMC PROB?
