Narrative:

While in cruise flight at 31000 ft, ATC asked us to state our current altitude. We state '31000 ft level.' ATC claimed we are showed to be 400 ft low. It was not clear of the cause in the altitude difference indicated by ATC. The transponder/altitude mode was reset, and altimeters reset to 29.92 setting. This seemed to fix the error, ATC seemed ok with the resolved problem. No further problems noted.
