Narrative:

Departure control switched us to ARTCC who gave us a heading to intercept the transition radial. They subsequently gave airspeed and heading adjustments before intercepting the radial and called out traffic ahead. I confirmed with the captain that we were still supposed to intercept the transition radial. Shortly after intercepting, center asked our heading and when told, center said we were supposed to maintain our last heading for traffic (not intercept) preventative action against reoccurrence of this confusion would be to advance beyond using ATC system and procedures that are 30 yrs out of date!
