Narrative:
On feb/sat/96 I was flying my steen skybolt at south jersey regional airport in mt. Holly (7MY). I was practicing maneuvers at about 2000 ft AGL, when a helicopter suddenly came upon me. I made a turn to the right to avoid it. I then passed to the right of the helicopter to give us both visual contact. (I don't think he saw me when he came upon me.) once a visual was established I saw no further problems. As I think about the situation it worries me. Because I am an experienced pilot and flight instructor I was able to make an evasive reaction. I am filing this report to make a record of the incident where a helicopter can rise vertically from below a fixed wing more or less causing a blind side effect. There are 3 flight schools at 7MY with several students soloing in the area. If there had been a student in the aircraft, instead of me, he might have panicked and I hesitate to think what the consequences would be.
