Narrative:

I was descending and cleared to 12000 ft. Read back 12000 ft and put 11000 ft in the altitude box. I did not realize my mistake and went down to 11000 ft. One contributing factor was that it was an unfamiliar airport which we had never been to. The PNF was looking at the approach book so I was flying and working the radio. To prevent a recurrence of this, the PNF could have looked at the approach book earlier. Also I could have confirmed the altitude with the PNF or the center.
