Narrative:
While descending phx I was being vectored. I was told to climb to 8000 ft plus resume own navigation. (On course) I turned to 330 degrees and went through my assigned altitude by 300-400 ft. When I noticed the deviation I quickly corrected it before the controller noticed but before returning to 8000 ft. The controller said that I had been 500 ft higher than assigned. This was no one's fault but my own. I will be much more careful in the future.
