Narrative:
Conducting IOE -- student on vectors then asked to proceed direct springfield VOR and flight plan route. He initiated turn and I went heads down to use ACARS. ATC called and advised present heading causing a drift north of a direct course to VOR. ATC provided short vector to avoid a conflict. Student coming from all glass aircraft (B757).

Narrative: CONDUCTING IOE -- STUDENT ON VECTORS THEN ASKED TO PROCEED DIRECT SPRINGFIELD VOR AND FLT PLAN RTE. HE INITIATED TURN AND I WENT HEADS DOWN TO USE ACARS.
