Narrative:

Departed sdf on short flight to lex. Cleared initially to 10000 ft. Aircraft light weight (100000 pounds) and relatively cold day. Due to light weight and cold day the rate of climb was very high. VNAV captured at least 1500 ft before leveloff. In order to slow climb, mode was changed from VNAV which caused altitude capture to be de-selected. When rearming altitude, I believe 11000 ft was inadvertently set in window. We still had altitude armed but unknown to us it was now for 11000 ft, not 10000 ft. Due to high rate of climb and light weight we were unable to safely stop climb until passing 10500 ft. Returned to 10000 ft and continued on to lex.

Title: ALTDEV. HIGH CLB RATE ON COLD DAY, FLC TOOK ACFT OUT OF VNAV IN ORDER TO SLOW CLB. THAT DE-SELECTED THE ALT CAPTURE AND, IF VERT SPD WAS THE MODE SET, THE ACFT CONTINUED TO CLB TO THE ERRONEOUSLY SET ALT. FLC SAYS IT IS UNKNOWN WHY ALT CHANGED FROM 10000 FT TO 11000 FT. IT MUST HAVE BEEN ERRONEOUSLY SET.

Narrative: DEPARTED SDF ON SHORT FLT TO LEX. CLRED INITIALLY TO 10000 FT. ACFT LIGHT WT (100000 LBS) AND RELATIVELY COLD DAY. DUE TO LIGHT WT AND COLD DAY THE RATE OF CLB WAS VERY HIGH. VNAV CAPTURED AT LEAST 1500 FT BEFORE LEVELOFF. IN ORDER TO SLOW CLB, MODE WAS CHANGED FROM VNAV WHICH CAUSED ALT CAPTURE TO BE DE-SELECTED. WHEN REARMING ALT, I BELIEVE 11000 FT WAS INADVERTENTLY SET IN WINDOW. WE STILL HAD ALT ARMED BUT UNKNOWN TO US IT WAS NOW FOR 11000 FT, NOT 10000 FT. DUE TO HIGH RATE OF CLB AND LIGHT WT WE WERE UNABLE TO SAFELY STOP CLB UNTIL PASSING 10500 FT. RETURNED TO 10000 FT AND CONTINUED ON TO LEX.
