Narrative:

Upon arrival to aircraft, I noticed parking brakes set and red parking light on terminal building illuminated. Company procedure is to leave brakes set any time parking light is on. After completing checklist and calling for pushback instructions, we were advised of traffic behind aircraft and to expect push after traffic cleared. I relayed this information to the tug operator. Tug operator then attempted to push aircraft without verifying brakes released (company policy is to get captain's confirmation of brakes released). Damage to nose gear assembly resulted.
