While on a training flight, a student in an small aircraft misunderstood altitude assignment to be 9000 ft instead of 5000 ft. The approach controller intervened when the aircraft was 600 ft higher than cleared, and climbing. Altitude deviation altitude overshot.

Narrative:

Was cleared to 5000 ft. Student misread clearance as 9000 ft and he dialed it into pre-select module. Controller queried when aircraft passed through 5600 ft. This writer overlooked the altitude excursion and failed to monitor student.

Title: WHILE ON A TRAINING FLT, A STUDENT IN AN SMA MISUNDERSTOOD ALT ASSIGNMENT TO BE 9000 FT INSTEAD OF 5000 FT. THE APCH CTLR INTERVENED WHEN THE ACFT WAS 600 FT HIGHER THAN CLRED, AND CLBING. ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT.

Narrative: WAS CLRED TO 5000 FT. STUDENT MISREAD CLRNC AS 9000 FT AND HE DIALED IT INTO PRE-SELECT MODULE. CTLR QUERIED WHEN ACFT PASSED THROUGH 5600 FT. THIS WRITER OVERLOOKED THE ALT EXCURSION AND FAILED TO MONITOR STUDENT.
