Narrative:

Controller stated, as I heard him, descend from 10000 ft to 7000 ft. I said back to the controller, heading 10000 ft for 7000 ft and he acknowledged. At 8400 ft, he asked what altitude for us to maintain, and I stated 7000 ft. He said no, the altitude was 8000 ft. At 7500 ft we climbed back to 8000 ft. He stated 'no problem.' there were no other aircraft in our area. The obvious here is that clearer communications are needed. We try very hard to do it right the first time.
