Narrative:

Executed missed approach from ILS runway 22 lga. Controller initiated due to separation on aircraft ahead. We were at 1700 ft MSL and initially told to climb to 2000 ft, heading 360 degrees. Almost immediately ATC changed altitude to 2500 ft. Altitude initially misunderstood to be 3000 ft. We leveled at 2500 ft then continued climb to 3000 ft with immediate correction back to 2500 ft. Contributing factors: unexpected missed altitude assigned very close to present altitude.
