Narrative:

We were late. Flying the third leg of a 4 leg day. The captain had me call ground control for pushback and instructed me to start both engines. I ran my starting engine flows and proceeded to start both engines. As the second engine was rolling back I called ground for taxi clearance. Ground control cleared us to taxi. I heard the captain say 'salute and release from guidance.' knowing that the pushback truck was on the left side of the aircraft, I checked right for clearance from other aircraft. As it turned out we did not get a salute and started to taxi. I am not sure if we were still hooked up or if we taxied into the towbar after we were disconnected. At any rate minor damage was sustained to the nose gear and the company cleared us to continue with the trip after an aircraft change. In the 'go' mode I didn't perceive to have or didn't think to back up the captain on visually looking for the pushback tug.
