Narrative:

Planned on crossing symon at 12000 ft and 280 KIAS as published. Controller requested 250 KIAS at fix. Due to unusually strong windshear at approximately 13000 ft, we incurred a very strong tailwind, approximately 55 KTS. This caused us to be fast at the fix. The pilot did try idle power and speed brakes to try to make the speed. Supplemental information from acn 324549: told by center to keep speed up. Approaching fim, given speed reduction. Winds out of west approximately 85 KTS (tailwind). Then told to cross fim 148 degree radial, 12 DME, at 250 KTS. Crossed fix at 280 KTS. First officer told approach our speed was 300 KTS when we were about 2 mi from fix. Approach didn't sound very happy. I should have asked for speed restr relief earlier. I also did not anticipate 50 KTS plus tailwind at 10000 ft.

Title: B737 FLC ENCOUNTERED STRONG TAILWINDS DURING A STAR DSCNT AND FAILED TO MAKE AN AMENDED XING SPD RESTR. FO ADVISED ATC.

Narrative: PLANNED ON XING SYMON AT 12000 FT AND 280 KIAS AS PUBLISHED. CTLR REQUESTED 250 KIAS AT FIX. DUE TO UNUSUALLY STRONG WINDSHEAR AT APPROX 13000 FT, WE INCURRED A VERY STRONG TAILWIND, APPROX 55 KTS. THIS CAUSED US TO BE FAST AT THE FIX. THE PLT DID TRY IDLE PWR AND SPD BRAKES TO TRY TO MAKE THE SPD. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 324549: TOLD BY CTR TO KEEP SPD UP. APCHING FIM, GIVEN SPD REDUCTION. WINDS OUT OF W APPROX 85 KTS (TAILWIND). THEN TOLD TO CROSS FIM 148 DEG RADIAL, 12 DME, AT 250 KTS. CROSSED FIX AT 280 KTS. FO TOLD APCH OUR SPD WAS 300 KTS WHEN WE WERE ABOUT 2 MI FROM FIX. APCH DIDN'T SOUND VERY HAPPY. I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR SPD RESTR RELIEF EARLIER. I ALSO DID NOT ANTICIPATE 50 KTS PLUS TAILWIND AT 10000 FT.
