Narrative:

This was an IFR training flight to satisfy the long cross country requirement for an instrument rating. Student is a private pilot. We were on an airway as cleared and encountered a mountain wave caused by a 35-40 KT northwest wind at 12000 ft MSL. The student was a little slow in correcting for a severe updraft and I believe that we were very close or exceeded the 300 ft buffer. No communication was made with center. As the instructor, I should have been watching a little closer as to the student's reaction to the effects of the wave.
