Narrative:

During cruise flight at 6000 ft MSL our GPWS warning system sounded 'terrain, terrain, pull up, pull up.' I reacted to the warning because we were in IMC conditions. We immediately initiated climb to 7000 ft. During this climb the GPWS stopped. ATC was advised of this action immediately. There was agreement and coordinated action between the crew members. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter first officer, upon looking back, knew that there was no high terrain in the area of the GPWS. The flight crew says they were in heavy rain and icing conditions which could have caused the false warning. Aircraft was a fairchild F27.
