Narrative:

Cleared to expedite to 10000 ft. Selected level change on FMC with IAS 330 selected. This traded altitude for airspeed to produce more than 6000 FPM descent. At approximately 12000 ft, center amended our altitude to 'maintain 11000 ft for VFR traffic.' no way to comply. As I was trying to 'level the aircraft' my first officer acquired the other aircraft and applied more forward pressure on the control column. We leveled at 10000 ft and was given a frequency change. At night it's much harder to judge distances so I'm thankful my first officer saw the traffic earlier and moved us out of the aircraft path.

Title: DURING EXPEDITED DSCNT, CTR CALLED FOR ACFT TO MAINTAIN 11000 FT, BUT DUE TO HIGH DSCNT RATE, RPTR WAS UNABLE. THE VFR TFC WAS ACQUIRED VISUALLY AND EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN. NMAC.
