Narrative:

ZNY requested cross 25 north of sax at 7000 ft for arrival ewr. Training in progress, standards captain training new first officer (student). Student was slow putting restr in the FMS and captain should have started down immediately when given restr. Finally started down at maximum descent, crossed 25 north of sax at about 9000 ft. Told ATC that we might be high on the restr, he acknowledged, but said nothing else. Should have analyzed vertical descent profile first. Determined if immediate descent was necessary. Time permitting, allowed student to input into FMS, afs to fly profile.
