Narrative:

As #2 engine approached takeoff power setting on the takeoff roll it made a 'popping' sound and the #2 engine failed. The takeoff was immediately aborted, the engine lost all power, there was no fire. All checklist and procedures regarding an engine failure were completed. Supplemental information from acn 321329: applied power to engines #1, #3 and slowly advanced power to #2. Upon reaching takeoff power and approximately 40-50 KTS, heard a 'pop' from the rear of the aircraft and simultaneously saw engine #2 instruments spool down, go static. Immediately get reports from both the tower and aircraft in back of us that we have fire, smoke coming from our #2 engine. Captain aborted the takeoff. We cleared the runway, accomplished our checklists. The tower had already sent crash fire rescue equipment and they confirmed along with the tower there was no longer indication of fire. Aircraft was towed back to gate with passenger on board and then they deplaned. FAA and NTSB notified and inspected #2 engine for damage containment after failure. Callback conversation with reporter of acn 321329 revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a B727-200. The 6TH stage compressor blade disintegrated destroying the hot section.

Title: ON TKOF ROLL #2 ENG FAILS AND FLC ABORTS.

Narrative: AS #2 ENG APCHED TKOF PWR SETTING ON THE TKOF ROLL IT MADE A 'POPPING' SOUND AND THE #2 ENG FAILED. THE TKOF WAS IMMEDIATELY ABORTED, THE ENG LOST ALL PWR, THERE WAS NO FIRE. ALL CHKLIST AND PROCS REGARDING AN ENG FAILURE WERE COMPLETED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 321329: APPLIED PWR TO ENGS #1, #3 AND SLOWLY ADVANCED PWR TO #2. UPON REACHING TKOF PWR AND APPROX 40-50 KTS, HEARD A 'POP' FROM THE REAR OF THE ACFT AND SIMULTANEOUSLY SAW ENG #2 INSTS SPOOL DOWN, GO STATIC. IMMEDIATELY GET RPTS FROM BOTH THE TWR AND ACFT IN BACK OF US THAT WE HAVE FIRE, SMOKE COMING FROM OUR #2 ENG. CAPT ABORTED THE TKOF. WE CLRED THE RWY, ACCOMPLISHED OUR CHKLISTS. THE TWR HAD ALREADY SENT CFR AND THEY CONFIRMED ALONG WITH THE TWR THERE WAS NO LONGER INDICATION OF FIRE. ACFT WAS TOWED BACK TO GATE WITH PAX ON BOARD AND THEN THEY DEPLANED. FAA AND NTSB NOTIFIED AND INSPECTED #2 ENG FOR DAMAGE CONTAINMENT AFTER FAILURE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR OF ACN 321329 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A B727-200. THE 6TH STAGE COMPRESSOR BLADE DISINTEGRATED DESTROYING THE HOT SECTION.
