Narrative:

After doing the ILS to runway 4R, and landing at ewr, I was told by tower to taxi via high speed taxiway J, and to hold short of taxiway south. That instruction was read back and complied with. I taxied on taxiway J which crosses runway 4L. Runway 4L was active for departing aircraft. I inadvertently crossed an active runway, and although I was instructed to taxi on taxiway J to taxiway south, the crossing of runway 4L should have been confirmed. Taxi instructions across runways should be verified with tower or ground control.
