Narrative:

During preflight of cockpit I noticed that the emergency medical kit was backwards in its holder so that the label could not be read. Also, one latch was open. When I removed it to turn it around, the other latch came loose and the shear wire popped. We called maintenance to have it replaced. The mechanic took the kit and said he had a new one on order. We got distracted and departed before it arrived. We should have kept the old kit, and left it in an obvious place as a reminder. Even better, we could have made a logbook write-up and left the logbook out. We were fortunate that no need arose for the kit during the one flight we operated without it.
