Narrative:

Flight reported ready for takeoff on runway 31. The tower said position and wait, it was confirmed by all 3 crew members. While taxiing into position I checked both directions of the runway. I noticed a plane on the runway coming in our direction. I then realized it was taking off on runway 13. I stopped the aircraft after passing the hold short line for runway 31. We asked tower and he denied giving us the position and wait instruction, then he cleared us for takeoff. The aircraft taking off on runway 13 was a russian TU154. Had we not stopped short and had the TU154 aborted, there would have been a conflict. I feel that this was either a mistake by the tower at lhbp or a problem caused by the language difficulties in eastern europe. The biggest lesson learned is always check both directions when crossing a runway, or taxiing on for takeoff.

Title: LGT TAXIING INTO POS AND HOLD SIGHTS ACFT ON TKOF OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND STOPS. CTLR DENIES ISSUING CLRNC.

Narrative: FLT RPTED READY FOR TKOF ON RWY 31. THE TWR SAID POS AND WAIT, IT WAS CONFIRMED BY ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS. WHILE TAXIING INTO POS I CHKED BOTH DIRECTIONS OF THE RWY. I NOTICED A PLANE ON THE RWY COMING IN OUR DIRECTION. I THEN REALIZED IT WAS TAKING OFF ON RWY 13. I STOPPED THE ACFT AFTER PASSING THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 31. WE ASKED TWR AND HE DENIED GIVING US THE POS AND WAIT INSTRUCTION, THEN HE CLRED US FOR TKOF. THE ACFT TAKING OFF ON RWY 13 WAS A RUSSIAN TU154. HAD WE NOT STOPPED SHORT AND HAD THE TU154 ABORTED, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A CONFLICT. I FEEL THAT THIS WAS EITHER A MISTAKE BY THE TWR AT LHBP OR A PROB CAUSED BY THE LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES IN EASTERN EUROPE. THE BIGGEST LESSON LEARNED IS ALWAYS CHK BOTH DIRECTIONS WHEN XING A RWY, OR TAXIING ON FOR TKOF.
