Narrative:

After takeoff from vgt we were assigned a waypoint to fly to and an altitude of 4000 ft. Before reaching the waypoint or altitude we were told to turn left to a new heading and climb to 5000 ft. My first officer wanted me to fly using the uns-1 and I wanted to use the VOR radial. During the discussion over who was in charge, we climbed through our assigned altitude of 5000 ft. At 5500 ft I stopped the climb and descended to 5000 ft. We should have discussed this before takeoff.
