Narrative:

Departing fishing lodge in dhc-2 seaplane for 15 min flight in VFR condition. Preflight, weight and balance, passenger brief ok. Landing area circled, set up for glassy water landing. Approach stabilized. 'Gump' checklist utilized, left traffic approximately 800 ft AGL. Gas: forward tank (most full), mixture: full rich. Water rudders: up. Carburetor heat: checked (slightly). At short final propeller forward (flat pitch) as 65 KTS and dissipating, nose raised for glassy water landing. Aircraft floated unacceptable length of landing area and go around was initiated. Engine missed when power added and caught just prior to contacting gently rising terrain in climb attitude, coming to rest near top of small knoll. Emergency evacuate/evacuation completed on my command without a hitch. No injuries, minor damage. Judgement: although part 91 recent experience for passenger met, more time in aircraft would have been in order. I hadn't flown a seaplane in 2 yrs, although I think we would have made it if engine hadn't missed. Go around decision was in order. More re-currency training was in order. These lodges need more stringent requirements, the passenger deserve it (part 91) perhaps to come under part 135.

Narrative: DEPARTING FISHING LODGE IN DHC-2 SEAPLANE FOR 15 MIN FLT IN VFR CONDITION. PREFLT, WT AND BAL, PAX BRIEF OK. LNDG AREA CIRCLED, SET UP FOR GLASSY WATER LNDG. APCH STABILIZED. 'GUMP' CHKLIST UTILIZED, L TFC APPROX 800 FT AGL. GAS: FORWARD TANK (MOST FULL), MIXTURE: FULL RICH. WATER RUDDERS: UP. CARB HEAT: CHKED (SLIGHTLY). AT SHORT FINAL PROP FORWARD (FLAT PITCH) AS 65 KTS AND DISSIPATING, NOSE RAISED FOR GLASSY WATER LNDG. ACFT FLOATED UNACCEPTABLE LENGTH OF LNDG AREA AND GAR WAS INITIATED. ENG MISSED WHEN PWR ADDED AND CAUGHT JUST PRIOR TO CONTACTING GENTLY RISING TERRAIN IN CLB ATTITUDE, COMING TO REST NEAR TOP OF SMALL KNOLL. EMER EVAC COMPLETED ON MY COMMAND WITHOUT A HITCH. NO INJURIES, MINOR DAMAGE. JUDGEMENT: ALTHOUGH PART 91 RECENT EXPERIENCE FOR PAX MET, MORE TIME IN ACFT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN ORDER.
