Narrative:

On departure I was assigned altitude of 8000 ft with a SID and transition of hays center out of jeffco, denver. After being turned over to denver approach, the controller changed my departure to direct mi high with a vector of 080 degrees to intercept hay center transition. This required me to review the SID for the change and review the map to determine what the controller was requesting. While reviewing the maps and SID, I climbed through my assigned altitude of 8000 ft to 9000 ft. The controller brought this to my attention and assigned 9000 ft as my final altitude. The change in departure procedure immediately after takeoff when I was prepared for a totally different departure took my attention away from flying the airplane.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA TWIN OVERSHOT CLB ALT DURING DEP.

Narrative: ON DEP I WAS ASSIGNED ALT OF 8000 FT WITH A SID AND TRANSITION OF HAYS CTR OUT OF JEFFCO, DENVER. AFTER BEING TURNED OVER TO DENVER APCH, THE CTLR CHANGED MY DEP TO DIRECT MI HIGH WITH A VECTOR OF 080 DEGS TO INTERCEPT HAY CTR TRANSITION. THIS REQUIRED ME TO REVIEW THE SID FOR THE CHANGE AND REVIEW THE MAP TO DETERMINE WHAT THE CTLR WAS REQUESTING. WHILE REVIEWING THE MAPS AND SID, I CLBED THROUGH MY ASSIGNED ALT OF 8000 FT TO 9000 FT. THE CTLR BROUGHT THIS TO MY ATTN AND ASSIGNED 9000 FT AS MY FINAL ALT. THE CHANGE IN DEP PROC IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF WHEN I WAS PREPARED FOR A TOTALLY DIFFERENT DEP TOOK MY ATTN AWAY FROM FLYING THE AIRPLANE.
