To nashville clearance requested jwn to M33 direct then tri. From nashville clearance cleared to M33 stay outside sua. Then from nashville departure turn right to heading 105 degree, resume navigation (own). I understood this to mean I could turn direct M33. Aircraft turned left to heading of 060 degrees for direct M33. After approximately 3 mins nashville departure requested heading, when advised of 060 degrees, they again had us change course to 110 degree. Controller stated he thought we were direct east. Bna runways in use runways 20R and 20L. Course change to 060 degrees put us too long in area of approach. WX conditions were 90 degrees and extreme haze.
