Narrative:

Upon climbing out from blm, en route to rbv and then to hpn, passenger door popped open approximately 4-6 inches and could not be closed. Required pilot's constant hand hold to prevent further opening, leaving only left hand free to pilot aircraft. Aircraft speed reduced and gear extended for stability. Reported situation to new york approach and was awaiting landing vectors when radio contact lost with new york approach due to loss of altitude. Emergency was declared on 121.5 and aircraft was vectored for safe landing at N87 by mcguire approach. No damage or injury. Latching mechanism was adjusted before further flight. No further occurrence in approximately 3 hours of flight subsequent thereto.

EMER WAS DECLARED ON 121.5 AND ACFT WAS VECTORED FOR SAFE LNDG AT N87 BY MCGUIRE APCH. NO DAMAGE OR INJURY. LATCHING MECHANISM WAS ADJUSTED BEFORE FURTHER FLT. NO FURTHER OCCURRENCE IN APPROX 3 HRS OF FLT SUBSEQUENT THERETO.
