Narrative:
Level at FL230. ATC asked us to increase airspeed, using autothrottles, increased speed bug. #1 engine egt increased above red line, went to 1250 degrees C. Retarded #1 throttle, ran appropriate checklist. It called for engine shutdown. Secured engine, declared emergency, returned to dfw with equipment standing by. Landing normal, no problems.

RETARDED #1 THROTTLE, RAN APPROPRIATE CHKLIST. IT CALLED FOR ENG SHUTDOWN. SECURED ENG, DECLARED EMER, RETURNED TO DFW WITH EQUIP STANDING BY. LNDG NORMAL, NO PROBS.
