Narrative:
Air carrier X was instructed to taxi into position and hold on runway 26L. As X started into position, he asked if he could clear the runway. X was advised to taxi straight ahead and make a 180 degree on the other side. Approximately 1 min later, air carrier X declared an emergency and said roll the fire equipment. This was done immediately and smoke was observed coming from the right side of airplane.

Title: B727 DECLARED EMER, ASKED FOR FIRE EQUIP.
Narrative: ACR X WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 26L. AS X STARTED INTO POS, HE ASKED IF HE COULD CLR THE RWY. X WAS ADVISED TO TAXI STRAIGHT AHEAD AND MAKE A 180 DEG ON THE OTHER SIDE. APPROX 1 MIN LATER, ACR X DECLARED AN EMER AND SAID ROLL THE FIRE EQUIP. THIS WAS DONE IMMEDIATELY AND SMOKE WAS OBSERVED COMING FROM THE R SIDE OF AIRPLANE.
