Narrative:

Informed of tire rubber on runway after takeoff by ZHN as per hnl tower. Could have been from our or another aircraft possibly. No unusual indications in our cockpit either upon raising gear or in climb and cruise. Flyby lax tower confirmed we had damaged tire. Declared emergency and landed uneventfully. 5 hours after takeoff in hnl. Concern here is second guessing by FAA as to decision to continue flight. In our collective opinion, at the time, there wasn't enough evidence to indicate the tire remains on the runway was ours, or even for that matter, when it was deposited. We felt captain had enough information and authority/authorized to continue flight!
