Narrative:

I was level at 11500 ft when engine suddenly sounded rough and vibrated. I heard a few backfire type sounds. I adjusted RPM to lessen vibration and mixture to stop backfire. The engine was putting out good power. I established that #3 cylinder was dead but had no idea why. I determined where I was and notified the FAA controller on 121.5. I was steered to combs but elected big sandy. I landed without incident. A mechanic looked in the cylinder and said he could see part of #3 exhaust valve missing. Both spark plugs were damaged beyond operation.
