Narrative:

ZNY cleared our flight from 17000 ft to FL230 and then gave frequency change. We came up on next center frequency 'climbing to FL230.' center: 'are you maintaining 17000 ft.' aircraft: 'negative, climbing to FL230.' center: 'maintain FL180.' aircraft: 'roger, maintain FL180.' we had to descend back to FL180 from approximately FL195. Before we left this frequency I inquired if he knew the previous controller had cleared us to FL230. All I heard was a microphone click carrier.
