Narrative:

While flying at about 1000 ft or less over water, the right engine developed strong vibration and was shut down. Shortly thereafter the left engine developed some vibration and sufficient power loss to require a controled ditching. The pilot and both passenger evacuate/evacuationed the aircraft (which subsequently sank) and were picked up by a motor launch whose sole occupant had witnessed some if not all of the ditching. No other aircraft was involved in this event. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states the aircraft was a C310K. He was using 121.5 for 2 mayday calls which were never heard. Most people in the area use a marine frequency for emergency notice. The boat which saw the ditching used the marine frequency and notified the coast guard. They arrived quite a while after the boat picked up the reporter and passenger. All were hospitalized and treated for hypothermia. Reporter has filed a reporter with the NTSB and the incident is being investigated by them at this time.

Title: C310 HAS ENG FAILURES OVERWATER. ACFT DITCHED.

Narrative: WHILE FLYING AT ABOUT 1000 FT OR LESS OVER WATER, THE R ENG DEVELOPED STRONG VIBRATION AND WAS SHUT DOWN. SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE L ENG DEVELOPED SOME VIBRATION AND SUFFICIENT PWR LOSS TO REQUIRE A CTLED DITCHING. THE PLT AND BOTH PAX EVACED THE ACFT (WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY SANK) AND WERE PICKED UP BY A MOTOR LAUNCH WHOSE SOLE OCCUPANT HAD WITNESSED SOME IF NOT ALL OF THE DITCHING. NO OTHER ACFT WAS INVOLVED IN THIS EVENT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THE ACFT WAS A C310K. HE WAS USING 121.5 FOR 2 MAYDAY CALLS WHICH WERE NEVER HEARD. MOST PEOPLE IN THE AREA USE A MARINE FREQ FOR EMER NOTICE. THE BOAT WHICH SAW THE DITCHING USED THE MARINE FREQ AND NOTIFIED THE COAST GUARD. THEY ARRIVED QUITE A WHILE AFTER THE BOAT PICKED UP THE RPTR AND PAX. ALL WERE HOSPITALIZED AND TREATED FOR HYPOTHERMIA. RPTR HAS FILED A RPTR WITH THE NTSB AND THE INCIDENT IS BEING INVESTIGATED BY THEM AT THIS TIME.
