Narrative:

Both crew thought was cleared to 8000 ft and 8000 ft was set in altitude alert. Descended through 9000 ft and ATC said he wanted us at 9000 ft. So, we climbed a few hundred ft back to 9000 ft. We were VFR and did see some traffic, but was not a threat to us. We should make sure we both agree what altitude is set in altitude alert window.

Narrative: BOTH CREW THOUGHT WAS CLRED TO 8000 FT AND 8000 FT WAS SET IN ALT ALERT. DSNDED THROUGH 9000 FT AND ATC SAID HE WANTED US AT 9000 FT. SO, WE CLBED A FEW HUNDRED FT BACK TO 9000 FT. WE WERE VFR AND DID SEE SOME TFC, BUT WAS NOT A THREAT TO US. WE SHOULD MAKE SURE WE BOTH AGREE WHAT ALT IS SET IN ALT ALERT WINDOW.
