Narrative:

During IFR vectors outbound for the gxy ILS approach, lost communication with den approach on 134.85 at 7500 ft during IMC. No ice was visible on airframe, however, ice was visible on tires. After trying other radio, cfii and I decided to return to 1v5, and climb to 8000 ft. We declared our intention in the blind. After about 5 mins, weak communication was established. ATC directed us to 128.45, and communication because good. We then continued VFR to 1v5 on 1200. Further investigation showed communication #2 (the original failure) was weak on receiver. We should have squawked 7600, not 7700.
