Narrative:

As I reached 3500 ft I commanded copilot to select altitude hold mode on autoplt. When he did not respond I told him to 'hit the altitude button' again. He then replied 'what altitude.' I then decided to disengage the autoplt and manually level the plane. By this time we were at 35300 ft and the controller called and said to maintain FL350 we descended quickly to FL350. 2 actions may have prevented this deviation. Making my request more clear to copilot and initiating level off myself immediately after his first failure to respond.
