Narrative:

I was departing mem international at night in a C172. I misunderstood the tower controller as saying 'taxi onto the runway and hold.' he actually said,' taxi short of the runway and hold.' I read back what I thought he'd said and he repeated his instructions. I again misunderstood. I taxied onto the runway and held. A DC10 on short final had to be waved off. The event would not have occurred if I had listened closer and repeated the controller's second transmission.
