Narrative:
My instructor and I were practicing a missed ILS to sna. Apparently the tower controller cleared me to 2400 ft, although I did not write it down. I have manual landing gear and was having trouble getting it up (it's a johnson bar). My instructor then told me to climb to 3500 ft, which I did. The controller then asked me if I blew my altitude. I looked at my instructor and he nodded yes, so I responded affirmative. We had canceled our IFR flight plan before climbing to 3500 ft. I did what my instructor told me to, which in retrospect, I should not have done. Had I not had trouble with my landing gear, I would have written the altitude down.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DURING AN INST TRAINING FLT, A STUDENT RECEIVED A CLRNC FROM THE TWR, AND LATER, CONFLICTING INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE INSTRUCTOR. THE STUDENT CLBED AND LEVELED 1100 FT HIGHER THAN ATC ASSIGNED, PER INSTRUCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: MY INSTRUCTOR AND I WERE PRACTICING A MISSED ILS TO SNA. APPARENTLY THE TWR CTLR CLRED ME TO 2400 FT, ALTHOUGH I DID NOT WRITE IT DOWN. I HAVE MANUAL LNDG GEAR AND WAS HAVING TROUBLE GETTING IT UP (IT'S A JOHNSON BAR). MY INSTRUCTOR THEN TOLD ME TO CLB TO 3500 FT, WHICH I DID. THE CTLR THEN ASKED ME IF I BLEW MY ALT. I LOOKED AT MY INSTRUCTOR AND HE NODDED YES, SO I RESPONDED AFFIRMATIVE. WE HAD CANCELED OUR IFR FLT PLAN BEFORE CLBING TO 3500 FT. I DID WHAT MY INSTRUCTOR TOLD ME TO, WHICH IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE. HAD I NOT HAD TROUBLE WITH MY LNDG GEAR, I WOULD HAVE WRITTEN THE ALT DOWN.
