Narrative:

While in cruise flight with ZAU with a filed route of flight from mke to dll V510 bitler nickl 2 arrival to msp, I asked for a heading to proceed direct to bitler (300 degrees). This was approved by ZAU. After crossing dells VOR, I was instructed to contact ZMP on 128.6. The controller was busy at the time of my transition so I waited to contact them. Shortly thereafter, ZMP called my flight number to which I responded. They then asked my heading and altitude which I gave as 300 degrees and 14000 ft. I was then instructed to turn left heading 280 degrees to remain clear of military airspace. I believe this problem could have been prevented had chicago first asked ZMP if my heading would be acceptable considering the status of the military airspace.
