Narrative:

Air carrier X from pit to atl on a heading of 190 degrees to intercept the agc 221 degree radial, passing 7000 ft MSL for assigned altitude of 14000 ft MSL. Departure initially pointed out traffic ahead and stated we would pass behind this traffic. Moments later, departure requested a right turn 050 degrees. At the same time we had a TA on our TCASII. Without delay I initiated a right descending turn away from the target. At the moment of the TA the target was plus 400 ft descending. On 20 mi scale the target and my aircraft was nearly overlapped. The stress level in the controller's voice indicated as rapid a response as possible was desirable. It is unknown how close we were to the target. The conditions were IMC.
