Narrative:

Climbing through FL260 en route to FL280, the aircraft cabin altitude became uncontrollable. As cabin altitude passed 5500 ft on its way up, a rapid descent was initiated prior to ATC clearance. Aircraft descended to 17000 ft where pressurization control again regained. There was no traffic conflict and we were VFR. Clearance was obtained for operation at 17000 ft upon arrival at that altitude. An emergency was not declared because of inability to contact controller prior to descent. (Controller workload) (cockpit workload).
