Narrative:

To the best of my knowledge, no FARS were violated. We did however, violate my personal rule of don't rush. This resulted in an incredibly stupid mistake. Upon entering the cockpit, the first officer told me he was having a problem with the salt lake 5 departure. I flipped back through my pages from 10- 9 to 10-3A and saw what he was complaining about. I explained the procedure and then completed the checklist. This was our mistake. We were looking at the lost communications procedure and departure 135.5 requesting VFR departure climb page 8Y. After 2 or 3 attempts contact was made just as we were approaching the slc VOR on the 341 radial. The first officer started his turn as depicted on the SID and the controller asked why we were turning toward 280 and I said I was following the SID. At that time we were passing 310 heading and I motioned the first officer to turn back to the right to 340 degree. He did so and then the controller cleared us to start a right turn at 8000 ft and to intercept the outbound course and to continue the climb to 13000 ft and ultimately FL230. The controller then told us what we had just discovered amidst much confusion that we were using the lost communication. I told him it was our mistake and that I was sorry if we had screwed them up. He replied no problem. The rest of the flight was normal. The controller did a great job. It was just a stupid mistake on our part. We didn't have any altitude or airspeed excursions -- stayed within our airspace and weren't in the proximity of any other aircraft.

Title: FLC FOLLOWED LOST COM ONLY PROC THAT WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NORMAL SALT LAKE 5 DEP WHICH WAS ASSIGNED.

Narrative: TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, NO FARS WERE VIOLATED. WE DID HOWEVER, VIOLATE MY PERSONAL RULE OF DON'T RUSH. THIS RESULTED IN AN INCREDIBLY STUPID MISTAKE. UPON ENTERING THE COCKPIT, THE FO TOLD ME HE WAS HAVING A PROB WITH THE SALT LAKE 5 DEP. I FLIPPED BACK THROUGH MY PAGES FROM 10- 9 TO 10-3A AND SAW WHAT HE WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT. I EXPLAINED THE PROC AND THEN COMPLETED THE CHKLIST. THIS WAS OUR MISTAKE. WE WERE LOOKING AT THE LOST COMS PROC AND DEP 135.5 REQUESTING VFR DEP CLB PAGE 8Y. AFTER 2 OR 3 ATTEMPTS CONTACT WAS MADE JUST AS WE WERE APCHING THE SLC VOR ON THE 341 RADIAL. THE FO STARTED HIS TURN AS DEPICTED ON THE SID AND THE CTLR ASKED WHY WE WERE TURNING TOWARD 280 AND I SAID I WAS FOLLOWING THE SID. AT THAT TIME WE WERE PASSING 310 HDG AND I MOTIONED THE FO TO TURN BACK TO THE R TO 340 DEG. HE DID SO AND THEN THE CTLR CLRED US TO START A R TURN AT 8000 FT AND TO INTERCEPT THE OUTBOUND COURSE AND TO CONTINUE THE CLB TO 13000 FT AND ULTIMATELY FL230. THE CTLR THEN TOLD US WHAT WE HAD JUST DISCOVERED AMIDST MUCH CONFUSION THAT WE WERE USING THE LOST COM. I TOLD HIM IT WAS OUR MISTAKE AND THAT I WAS SORRY IF WE HAD SCREWED THEM UP. HE REPLIED NO PROB. THE REST OF THE FLT WAS NORMAL. THE CTLR DID A GREAT JOB. IT WAS JUST A STUPID MISTAKE ON OUR PART. WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY ALT OR AIRSPD EXCURSIONS -- STAYED WITHIN OUR AIRSPACE AND WEREN'T IN THE PROX OF ANY OTHER ACFT.
