Narrative:

Flew ILS approach into FOD. WX was 50, 3/4 fog canceled on ground. Upon taxi-out for mcw, listened to AWOS. WX was now 50, 1/2 fog. After taxi checklist, we discussed departure procedures. I was flying with a new hire. After takeoff I checked in with ZMP, and they cleared us direct to mcw and issued us a squawk code. It was then that I realized we had forgotten to get a clearance. ATC said nothing about it, and there was no conflict. We had got involved with departure procedures, and got distracted. In the future, we must make sure that we complete all required steps, and not become distracted.
