Narrative:

Flight was in cruise at FL410 in clear skies at M79, autothrottles on, autoplt engaged, thrust set in maximum continued mode, V navigation and left navigation engaged. Captain went to 'blueroom.' when captain returned to cockpit aircraft was nose high and airspeed was deteriorating below 180 KTS. Thrust was now in cruise mode. Captain immediately disconnected autothrottles, selected maximum continuous power and told first officer to initiate descent to increase airspeed. Captain called ATC passing 40500 ft to inform them of actions and get clearance to lower altitude (FL350). Airspeed increased to normal. All systems and engine operations were normal. The aircraft responded normally with no abnormalities noted. Remainder of flight was normal in all respects. Problem became apparent due to aircraft buffet. Inattn to aircraft was probable leading cause. First officer was not overly pleased by having to work for any captain.
