Narrative:

We were climbing out of stl when at approximately FL180 we lost the cabin pressurization system. The cabin pressure made swings from maximum increase then maximum decrease. We were forced to initiate a decrease in flight altitude. We attempted contact 3 times with ZKC before they answered. At this point, we had already commenced the descent. We probably had already descended 800 ft before ZKC responded. There did not appear to be any conflict. We made an immediate return to stl and landed.
