Narrative:

While in cruise in an area of thunderstorms we were keeping a careful radar watch of the various buildups. A call to center to request a higher altitude brought a strong reaction from the controller 'where have you been for the last 20 min?' what a question! Neither of us had left our seats during the previous 20 min. No flight attendants had visited the cockpit during this time. We had not adjusted the volume controls...in short we both were at a total loss to explain the lack of or loss of communications.
