Narrative:

Cleared stadium visual for runway 24R lax. This clearance was received just before turning base. Was expecting 'general' visual approach clearance. Got out 'stadium' visual chart and first officer flew approach as charted. After turning final, we overshot final to runway 24R and began to line up visually with the runway 25L/right complex at lax. First officer did the right thing by keeping the aircraft on autoplt as we both searched for traffic. We/he had not, however, asked for the autoplt to intercept and track to localizer. Even with both pilots 'heads up,' we both thought the runway 25 complex was the runway 24 complex (haze). We did not insure a proper autoplt backup by arming the localizer track function. We are both very experienced with the lax area. There was absolutely no traffic conflict, however, we strayed off of the charted visual approach. Also noted first officer had habit of not using ADF backup in instrument setup (due to MD80 training program). 'Romen' OM was tuned and may have helped line up for proper runway. (Unfortunately, it didn't help me!)

Title: ANOTHER HDG TRACK DEV DURING THE LAX RWY 24R VISUAL APCH PROC.

Narrative: CLRED STADIUM VISUAL FOR RWY 24R LAX. THIS CLRNC WAS RECEIVED JUST BEFORE TURNING BASE. WAS EXPECTING 'GENERAL' VISUAL APCH CLRNC. GOT OUT 'STADIUM' VISUAL CHART AND FO FLEW APCH AS CHARTED. AFTER TURNING FINAL, WE OVERSHOT FINAL TO RWY 24R AND BEGAN TO LINE UP VISUALLY WITH THE RWY 25L/R COMPLEX AT LAX. FO DID THE RIGHT THING BY KEEPING THE ACFT ON AUTOPLT AS WE BOTH SEARCHED FOR TFC. WE/HE HAD NOT, HOWEVER, ASKED FOR THE AUTOPLT TO INTERCEPT AND TRACK TO LOC. EVEN WITH BOTH PLTS 'HEADS UP,' WE BOTH THOUGHT THE RWY 25 COMPLEX WAS THE RWY 24 COMPLEX (HAZE). WE DID NOT INSURE A PROPER AUTOPLT BACKUP BY ARMING THE LOC TRACK FUNCTION. WE ARE BOTH VERY EXPERIENCED WITH THE LAX AREA. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO TFC CONFLICT, HOWEVER, WE STRAYED OFF OF THE CHARTED VISUAL APCH. ALSO NOTED FO HAD HABIT OF NOT USING ADF BACKUP IN INST SETUP (DUE TO MD80 TRAINING PROGRAM). 'ROMEN' OM WAS TUNED AND MAY HAVE HELPED LINE UP FOR PROPER RWY. (UNFORTUNATELY, IT DIDN'T HELP ME!)
