Narrative:

Captain and relief first officer were changing seats when first officer noticed aircraft at same altitude (1-2 O'clock bearing 10-20 mi away). Aircraft was on constant bearing and closing. First officer recognized aircraft at same altitude and elected to leave FL350 climbing to FL370 -- to avoid collision with air carrier -- an airbus. TCASII advisory alerted crew with resolution. ATC cleared aircraft to FL370. Controller error was definitely a contributing factor. Controller never once announced traffic and seemed oblivious of a near miss.
