Narrative:

Our company call sign is xx shuttle. Recently a commuter under air carrier colors began service to dca. Their call sign is yy shuttle. Whoever approves call signs is building a nice trap for either our clrncs or instructions. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states this new call sign has created confusion in the cockpit. Reporter company has been flying these rtes 'forever' and now they have another company so close to their call sign it is a problem. Reporter is a safety representative for the union and has tried to put pressure on both the company and the union to do something. Feels ASRS might have more impact. The new company uses the yy shuttle call as their identify so the similarity is noticeable.
