Narrative:

Climbing out of saginaw and handed off to center, originally told to fly direct to salem VOR. Amended to fly heading of 185 degrees. On this flight we were conducting IOE (initial operating experience) on the first officer. I became preoccupied with instructing the first officer on how to give a passenger cruise briefing. When I glanced at the EFIS, I noticed that we were not direct to salem VOR and corrected to the left. Center almost immediately asked if our heading was still 185 degrees. I then realized the last clearance was a heading and no longer direct to the VOR. Immediate correction back to the right was made and no conflict was noted. Additional training with the first officer brought him up to speed on how to fill out a NASA form.
